Fresh archaeological discoveries at the historic Kashashila Shiv Ashram in Mayong have brought new attention to the region’s ancient cultural heritage. The artefacts were discovered during excavation work for a new structure at the shrine in Hatimuria village.
Among the significant findings is a semi-finished stone sculpture believed to date back to the 7th–8th century. Archaeologists have also recovered terracotta sculptures estimated to belong to the 11th–12th centuries. The discoveries indicate that Mayong was an important centre of art, culture and religious activities several centuries ago.
The newly recovered artefacts have been carefully preserved at the Mayong Village Museum and Research Centre for further study and public display. Researchers believe the findings could provide valuable insights into the historical and artistic traditions of the region.
The discoveries have generated interest among historians, archaeologists and local residents, while highlighting the need to protect Mayong’s archaeological heritage.
